Alger's Candlelight Giving Program was created with the ultimate goal of giving back to the community and those less fortunate. The Committee is comprised of employees across all areas of the Firm and is dedicated to the sole purpose of creating volunteer opportunities for firm employees and finding charities that the Firm can support.

Since the inception of the Committee, our employees have participated in numerous volunteer activities throughout the TriState Area, partnering with the following organizations:
Sponsored "Alger Science Fun" at P.S. 63 on the Lower East Side for an under-served NYC public school
Sponsored a clothing event at Baby Buggy for children in women's shelters in NYC
Sponsored a "Bike Assembling Event" for children in need during the holidays
Sponsored several "Casual Monday Charitable Blues" to raise money for an employee's personal choice of charity
Sponsored several "Chances for Charity" raffles to raise money for an employee's personal choice of charity
Sponsored "Alger MiniOlympics" at Chelsea Piers for an under-served public school in Brooklyn, NY
Sponsored regular Food Drives with City Harvest, raising over 2,000 pounds of food for NYC's homeless
Sponsored "Kids Zone Night" at the Father's Heart Ministries, a homeless shelter on the Lower East Side
Sponsored several successful blood drives in New York and New Jersey using the Gregory Wachtler Bloodmobile, a 9/11 Memorial
Sponsored "Vertical Express" event for The Huega Center for Multiple Sclerosis for the past several years
Participated in the JPMorgan Chase Corporate Challenge for the past six years
Donated used sneakers through "Share Your Soles" which provides footwear to Third World Countries
Sponsored Central Park tours with senior citizens at Lott Assisted Living in Upper Manhattan
Participated in several annual "Run for Rose" races on Fire Island, NY, benefiting the American Brain Tumor Association and the Rose DiGangi Foundation
Sponsored employees who participated in the Susan G. Komen "Race for the Cure" and "Avon Walk for Breast Cancer"
Sponsored "Tyler's Court" in Springfield, MA in coordination with the Tyler Ugolyn Foundation, which was recognized by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame
Worked with New York Cares and their Winter Wishes Program for the past nine years, answering letters from children in all boroughs of New York and providing holiday gifts to those who would otherwise not be receiving gifts during the holidays
Partnered with the New York Restoration Project and planted trees in East New York, Brooklyn for Earth Day 2011: planted trees in Queens for Earth Day 2012, beautified the 211th Street Community Gardens in the Bronx for Earth Day 2013; planted trees and restored gardens in Brooklyn for Earth Day 2014, and in 2015, helped plant trees and clean up Sherman Creek Park
Partnered with Dress for Success and Career Gear on an annual basis and have collected over 700 items of business clothing from both the New York and New Jersey Offices
During Reading is Fundamental Week, collected over 150 books which were distributed to various children's and adult facilities, including homeless shelters, daycare and community centers, public schools, and after-school programs
Held annual Bowling for Charity tournaments at Bowlmor Lanes. All proceeds were donated to the winning team's charity of choice. In 2010, proceeds went to Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City, in 2011 to Aids United, in 2012 to American Patriot Heroes Fund, in 2013, 2014, and 2015 to Rose DiGangi Foundation and Cure Breast Cancer Foundation, and in 2016, to City Harvest
Donated several hundred backpacks over the past four years, filled with essential school supplies to Senator Joseph Vitale's (NJ) office, who works in conjunction with Foster and Adoptive Family Services Foundation
Partnered with VOICES of September 11th (“VOICES”) to commemorate the life of every Alger employee lost on 9/11 and document the stories of employees who survived
Held "Operation Military Giving", where employees packaged and shipped 75 boxes, filled with food, snacks, magazines, games, etc. to U.S. military troops stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan during the holidays (December)
Donated $350 to the New York City Coalition Against Hunger as part of a year-long initiative of tracking all food deliveries to Alger
Sponsored four "Central Park Zoo Tours" with PS 375 kindergarten students, the Encarnacion School 3rd graders, and PS184M, and PS52K
Volunteered at Covenant House, a non-profit organization that helps homeless youth in NYC, by sorting through a variety of donations the House receives daily
Participated in Hands on New York Day, in collaboration with New York Cares, planting trees and greenery at the Harlem Rose Garden
Volunteered at Animal Haven, a no-kill animal shelter in Soho, in 2011, 2012 and 2014, socializing cats and walking dogs; and in 2013, with the The Humane Society in New York City socializing and bathing dogs and playing with puppies.
Held Alger Game Night at the Kateri Residence, an assisted living facility for the elderly on NY's Upper West Side
Held "New Eyes for the Needy" events to collect used eyewear for those in need
Held three annual Halloween events at Alger offices, inviting NYC schoolchildren to dress up and enjoy a day of games
Held a teambuilding event at Alger's offices in December 2012 for Hurricane Sandy relief, packaging over 350 kits for Sandy victims in NY and NJ; partnered with New York Cares
Partnered with Rebuilding Together to help renovate and restore a women’s home in Jersey City, NJ in April 2013
Participated with Habitat for Humanity for a home building project in Charleston, SC, in October 2013, a post-Hurricane Sandy home restoration project in Coney Island, NY in April 2015, and "Brush with Kindness" painting project in Manhattanville in 2016.
Sponsored firm-wide fundraising and matching events for the victims of Hurricane Sandy, the Oklahoma tornadoes, Typhoon Haiyan in the Phillippines, and the Nepal earthquake
Partnered annually since 2014 with City Harvest as part of their "Skip Lunch Fight Hunger" campaign that asks New Yorkers to donate what they would normally spend on lunch to help feed hungry children and their families during the summer.
Sponsored Alger’s First Annual Charity Bingo game, with winnings benefiting St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital
Held several Easter Basket Making Team Building events, donating over 300 baskets to local shelters in the Bronx, Harlem, and Jersey City, NJ.
Created "Spring into Jeans" Mondays, a weekly fundraiser which raised over $2,300, which was donated to Catholic Relief Society and the Fort Greene Park Conservancy
Held a team building event for National Senior Citizens Month, donating over 100 care packages to a local nursing home in New York City.
In 2017, Alger began the "Donations for Denim" initiative, raising funds by encouraging employees to wear jeans. During the year, donations will be made to American Heart Association, Autism Cares Foundation, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, City Harvest, Susan G. Komen Foundation, and The Nature Conservancy.
